The Ming dynasty ruled China from 1368-1644. That era of Chinese history to create a surprising amount, glazed porcelain wares, embroidered silks and artworks in a variety of other materials. The Empire of the Great Ming also produced a large number of forgeries designed to part the unsuspecting buyers of their wealth. This was a problem, in fact, were printed guides to help detect such fraud. We can be sure then that this vase is very authentic.
Hailing from the moment of Hongwu, the founder of the Ming dynasty, the vase was expensive, most recently purchased at auction for Steve Wynn. The Las Vegas casino owner and art collector insatiable is often criticized by the art community to pay high prices for pieces of the second category, but this purchase is certainly an exception. The vase is decorated with 14th century copper red scrolling flowers and is well preserved and very rare.
Mr. Wynn purchased the vase dear to Imperial Sale, Christie Hong Kong to 78.52 million Hong Kong dollars. Instead of keeping him locked in his private collection, however, the vase returned to China by donating it to a museum in Macau.
